Hvar Out!

After some amazing days in Dubrovnik, it was time to head to the Dalmatian Coast island of Hvar. Hvar has become known as a top beach party location in Europe and a hot spot for the young and affluent in recent years. I was more interested in the clear waters and warm, sunny weather.

The correct pronunciation of Hvar is "far" for a native English speaker.

The flowers were beautiful.

Unfortunately, the weather did not really cooperate with my plans. The sun was constantly hiding behind a sea of puffy clouds and rain came and went. This spoiled my plans for a full day tour of local caves and swimming spots and even making it to the beach, but I still tried to make the best out of the situation.

The sun setting behind an evening cloud.

This cutie could be found in this position nearly every time I climbed up and down the stairs.

I hiked up the hill behind the town to see the views from the fortress, wandered down to the famous Hula Hula beach club, and climbed more and more stairs...again!

passion flower...my green thumb dad quickly identified it for me

Hvar felt different from Dubrovnik. Traveling alone, I found it pretentious and somewhat unwelcoming. The gray weather didn't help.

a Croatian version of a beach- note the very safe looking ladder entrance to the water

The weather held long enough to take a tour of the nearby chain of Pakleni Islands and take a dip in the water at Palmizana. The boat was a RIB boat and felt a bit like riding a giant jet ski.

The day I left Hvar the forecast was warm and sunny! : P
